TOUR 12 ((M); North Thailand Explorer: Small group Tour
15 Days. From AUD $1,540

This North Thailand small group tour needs a little bit of energy as Hilltribe Trekking from Pai takes a bit of effort to get to the local hill tribe villages amid spectacular mountain scenery. But it’s definitely worth the effort. A relaxing Thai massage afterwards will help aid any recovery needed.

Start as usual in the excitement of Bangkok then see the historical beauty of the past kingdom of Sukothai before coming face to face with the Karen, Lahu and Lisu hill tribe people who have a totally different way of life in their mountain homes. It also has Chiang Mai’s northern Thai culture and food as well as some Thai history, wonderful shopping and maybe a local herb whiskey or two.

By trekking from Pai you will also get a far better cultural experience than the mass trekkers get from the big city operators. Pai in itself is another of those magical travel destinations.

A few of the dozens of other options may be Vimanmek Teak Mansion, Chinatown, Wat Traimit, Jim Thompsons House, Silom or Sukhumvit road shops. OR? Maybe just lay back and have a traditional Thai Massage. A month in the capital wouldn't allow you enough time to see it all. D.

Just a few of the easy to visit sights by foot, Tuk Tuk or Sawngthaew, (share taxi) include Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Jet Yot and Wat Phan Tao among dozens of others. If you don't temple out there is still the mountain top temple of Phra That Doi Suthep, approx fifteen kilometres away in a national park.

For Shoppers it doesn't get much better than Chiang Mai. After a day at Kad Suan Kaew Shopping Centre, Worowat Market, Airport Plaza and/or dozens of other specialty shops all over the place you can barter hard at the famous Night Bazaar. Day 10:

HILLTRIBE VILLAGE - Another day of peaceful trekking and interesting villages amid the spectacular Mae Hong Song mountain scenery.  B. L. D.

FITNESS - Trekking is not a contest to see who is the fittest or fastest. Although it is generally easy walking at your own pace, being mountain trekking as such, there will be some uphill sections so a reasonable level of fitness is required to get the most out of it.
